Sensational Selwyn Young Achiever Award
Sensational Selwyn Young Achiever Award

Tonight was the awards dinner for the Faringdon Sensational Selwyn Awards held at the Lincoln Events Centre. It was a fantastic evening celebrating Selwyn's achievers with many a laugh. I was nominated in two categories, firstly the sporting category which recognises outstanding achievements in sport at a high level for people within the district. Secondly I was nominated in the Young Achievers award which acknowledges, encourages, rewards and most importantly promotes the positive achievements of young people in the Selwyn District. I was lucky to be one of three finalists in the tough sporting category with 11 nominees! The award was given to Rosa Flanagan who is an amazing Athletics runner. I was rather happy when my name was also called as a finalist for the Young Achiever award with 8 nominees and was thoroughly surprised and delighted to be announced as the winner. As my father noted with a wee chuckle, it was one of the first times I have been rendered completely speechless. The shortest thank you speech I have ever witnessed and I was the one that delivered it! Although I have the ability to talk the hind leg off a donkey when I want to, the moment I was gently pushed to the podium my mind went completely blank... not an ideal situation. Fortunately, later as I was talking to our local MP Amy Adams, who is an amazingly natural speaker, I was reassured that she would have done the exact same thing at my age too!! It was also lovely to chat to the Councillor, Sam Broughton who was seated at my table. Also it was fun getting to know the two other Young Achiever Finalists Tim Logan (an environmentalist) and Louise Richards (a netball player and athletics competitor). Seeing Daniel Carter's name on the trophy as the 2004 winner was a nice surprise!! It was a fantastic evening and I would like to thank GSL who is the gold sponsor of the young achievers award and the Selwyn district for the recognition that comes with being presented with this award. I would also like to congratulate all the other nominees, finalists and winners in all the categories. The Selwyn Times wrote this about the event: Selwyn's finest recognised at awards night.
